CULTURAL SENSITIVITY:
Every culture has a unique view of the world. It is important to enter another culture with
humility, respect, and understanding of the traditions. Be respectful and considerate of their customs – just
because it is different doesn’t make it wrong.

MONEY EXCHANGE AND CASH:
Kenya uses the Kenyan Shilling (KES) and the exchange rate as of Jan 2020 was 1 US D = 101.41 KES. Any
cash you take should be new, unmarked US dollar bills. ATMs will allow you to withdraw Shillings directly and will
probably give you the best exchange rate. There are ATMs in the airport but are difficult to find and unreliable
outside the airport. Although some establishments accept credit and debit cards, it might be easier to use cash. It
is wise to let your credit card company know in advance where you will be traveling so charges won’t be blocked.
Travelers checks are not widely accepted.

ELECTRICITY:
The standard electrical current in Kenya is 220 Volt AC. You will need a voltage converter in addition to a
plug adapter in order to use any electronic devices. Travel converters can be purchased at Walmart or Target. If
power supply states 100-240 volt, a converter is not needed. The standard outlets have two horizontal slots on the
bottom and one vertical (TYPE G). Electrical surges and outages are common so you should use a surge protector
for expensive appliances.

COMMUNICATION:
Cell phone service is available in Nairobi, but rural areas often experience limited service. You can
communicate with family through WhatsApp, Viber, FaceTime, and Skype. Wi-Fi is available but not
at all times. To call the US from Kenya, dial 011, then the area code and local number.

TIME ZONE:
Kenya is located in the East Africa Time Zone, it is 11 hours ahead of Pacific Standard time.
